From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A surname now found only in the vicinity of Hawick. Of local origin from a small place named Fawhop" on Fawhope Bum, parish of Teviothead, Roxburghshire. The place name appears in record as Fallhope, Phallhope, and Phaehope, and in local speech it is pronounced Phaup. Adam de Fauhope was juror on inquisition as to the rights and privileges claimed by Robert de Brus, earl of Carrick, in Annandale, 1304 (Bain, II, p. 412). Ade de Fawhope, perhaps the same person, held the land of Culschoglll apparently in the reign of Robert I (RMS., I, App. II, 302n). In 1396 a payment was made to one Fulop, a minstrel (ER., III, p. 431). Archibald Fawup or Fawp was chaplain in the chapel of the Blessed Virgin in Linlithgoe in 1529 (Johnsoun), Andrew Phaup or Phaupe appears as notary in Melrose, 1657, 1662 (RRM., I, p. 150; II, p. 6), and Thomas Phalp, a Covenanter from the parish of Morrenside (Muiravonside), was drowned off Orkney, 1679 (Hanna, II, p. 253). William Phaup is in record in Langtoun in 1686 and Janet Phaup in Ormstoun in 1699 (Peebles CR.). Isobel Phaup was a 'cotar' in Stitchill in 1715 (Stitchill, p. 171). The Ettrick Shepherd's maternal grandfather. Will o' Phawhope, was, in local tradition, the last man on the Border who had spoken with the fairies.
