From the occupation. The pick man or pickieman was a miller's servant whose occupation was to trim the mill-stones by "picking" them when worn smooth by use. 1604, "Sum tennentis . . . wald nocht content thame selffis with the serwice of the peckcaman" (Urie, p. 1). In 1520 an acre of land was set to Adam Pikkeman in Arbroath (RAA., II, p. 430). In 1597 there is mention of one Williamson, pickyman, at the miln of Essilmont (SCM., I, p. 133). Janet Pickieman, alias Tappie, 1599, and James Pickieman in Peatie, parish of Bervie, 1686 (St. Andrews). Andrew Pickieman, messenger in Kirkaldie, 1689 (RPC., 3. ser. XIV, p. 625). Pickeman 1525.
