Pickwick Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Pickwick' or Bickwick, some spot in the West country; compare Buckle and Puckle, Burser and Purser, Bickerdike and Pickerdike &c. My earliest reference is from the county of Wilts. This is interesting. The Pall Mall Gazette (March 3,' 888) says: 'During the hearing of a case in the High Court of Justice yesterday, Mr. Dickens, a son of the famous novelist, and counsel for the defendant, said he should call as a witness a Mr. Pickwick (laughter). He added: It may interest your lordship (Baron Huddleston) to learn that this gentleman is a descendant of Mr. Moses Pickwick, who kept a coach at Bath, and I have very good reason to believe that it was from this Mr. Moses Pickwick that the name of the immortal Pickwick was taken.' Evidently the surname is a West-country one, and has existed there at least six centuries.
William de Pikewike, Wiltshire, 1273. Hundred Rolls.
Thomas de Bykewyk, Somerset, 1 Edward III: Kirby's Quest.
Ralph de Bykewyk, Somerset, 1 Edward III: ibid.
Walter de Bykewyk, Somerset, 1 Edward III: ibid.
The three last-named were all resident in Redlysch.
1647. Married — Charles Pikwik and Maria Potter: Reg. Darrington, Yorkshire.
(English) dweller at 1 the Pick or Peak Place [v. Pick (English), Peak(e, and + Middle English wick, Old English wíc] 2 the Pig-Place (Piggery, or Swine- (market)place) [v. under Pigg] The form Pikewike occurs in the Wilts Hundred Rolls (there is a Pickwick near Corsham, Wilts), Bykewyk in a Somerset Subsidy-Roll A.D. 1327, and Pikwik in a 17th-cent. Yorkshire Register.
This name is no fabrication of our great Novelist; and indeed very few of his names, however happy, however ludicrous, are so. I have noticed a large proportion of them on actual signboards in his own native county of Kent. At Folkeston there is, or at least, there recently was, a veritable Mark Tapley-one too who had been to America! Although Pickwick does not occur in our Gazetteer, it appears that a locality in Wiltshire formerly gave name to a family called De Pikewike. In the reign of Edward I., saith my record, one William de Pikewike, like his immortal namesake, found himself within the walls of a prison-I am sorry to say, for felony; but as the offence was compromised for eight shillings, we may presume that it was not a very enormous one.-Rotuli Hundredorum, vol. ii., page 273.
