Piggot Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Picot.' Mr. Lower says, 'A well known corruption of Pigott.' This is to reverse the true order. Pigott is a corruption of Pickett, or, more correctly, Picot or Pichot. It is strange that while the name has ramified so strongly, so little can be gleaned of its history. Camden's derivation from Old French picote, the small - pox, picote, pock - marked, freckled, is unkind; but he gave no authority for the statement. That Picot was a personal name is clear, for Picot, a chief tenant in Hampshire, and Picot de Grentebrig', both occur in Domesday. It is curious, too, to observe that two families in Cheshire, the Pigots and Pichots, ran side by side for some generations, and Dr. Ormerod long ago surmised that both sprang from one common ancestor—Gilbert Pichot, lord of Broxton (Earwaker's East Cheshire). Radulphus Picot (Pipe Rolls, 6 Henry II, pp. 53, 55). Also Picot and Picotus, as a personal name (ibid. pp. 33, 46).

Picotus de Laceles, temp. 1109: Lincolnshire Survey.

Picot de Tani, Pipe Roll, 7 Henry II.

Picot de Flexbergh, Wiltshire, 1273. Hundred Rolls.

Elis Pyket, Buckinghamshire, ibid.

Walter Pycot, Cambridgeshire, ibid.

Godfrey Piket, Somerset, 1 Edward III: Kirby's Quest.

A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

1 the French Pigot, Pigat, Piguet, denoted individuals whose faces were spotted or pitted [from Old French pigue, pockmarked, freckled, etc., with diminutive suff. -ot, -at, -et] 2 for Picot: v. under Picket(t.

Pygot occurs in Leland’s supposed copy of the Roll of Battle Abbey; Pigot in Holinshed’s copy; and Pigot is the usual form in the Hundred-Rolls.

A 15th-cent. Thomas Pygot, of Norfolk, was also known as Picot.

Surnames of the United Kingdom (1912) by Henry Harrison

A known corruption of Pigott.

Patronymica Britannica (1860) by Mark Antony Lower

Pitted with the small—pox, spotted in the face, from the French Picotê.

An Etymological Dictionary of Family and Christian Names (1857) by William Arthur

Pygot: The name Picot occurs seven times in Domesday. It was a personal or nickname. The name is a diminutive of Pygge, a girl.

Family Names And Their Story (1913) by Sabine Baring-Gould

The name of Pickett may be a corruption of Pickard, though we must remember that there is an estate of this name in the parish of South Perrott, Dorset.
