A pylch was a medieval garment, made of fur (pellis). The word is Chaucerian, and it also occurs in Caxton's Reynard the Fox. Reynard, having turned hermit, is represented as wearing "a pylche and an heren sherte (a hair shirt) thereunder." Cap. V. A Pilcher was a maker of the article. Pilcher, Pilchere, Le Pilecher. H.R.
