If it is, the name may represent an Anglo-Saxon *Pílingas (dat. *Pílingum), ‘(the Estate of the) Píl- Family’; or the -ing may be the Old Northern English -ing (Old Norse eng), a meadow, the first element being Dialectal English pill a pool; or the second element may really be Northern English ling (Old Norse lyng), heath. But if-as seems not unlikely-the -g here is excrescent. -lyn or -lin may be the Northern English lin, a pool, and pil be Old English píl, a stake (there is, or was, a large moss at Pilling; also noted ‘fence-dikes’]
