PILMUIR, Pilmore, Pilmer: This surname Is most probably of south country origin as there are lands of the name in Berwickshire and Dumfriesshire, and a Pilmoor in the North Riding of Yorkshire. Adam de Pilemor witnessed a charter by Roger, bishop of St. Andrews, c. 1188-1202 (RPSA., p. 270), and Johannes de Pilemour witnessed another by Matilda, countess of Anegus, c. 1242-43 (RAA., I, p. 82), Roger de Pillemuir was freed from obligation of payment to Walter dominus de Venali, 1292 (Panmure, II, p. 151), Ade de Pilmure had a confirmation of the lands of Glack, c. 1294 (REA., I, p. 36), and William de Pilmor and Robert de Pylemor, both of county of Edinburgh, rendered homage, 1296 (Blair. II, p. 201,207, 211). John de Pylmor, son of Adam de Pilmore, burgess of Dundee, became bishop of Moray in 1326 (Dowden, p. 152-153). He may be the John de Pilmore, monk of Cupar, who had a safe-conduct in 1321 while on a mission from Robert I. The bishop appears to have taken cere of his relatives. Richard de Pilmur had provision of the canonry of Aberdeen and prebend of Cruden in 1328 (Pap. Lett,, II, p. 286). Thomas de Pylmer, nephew of Rishop John was granted the canonry and prebend of Caithness (Pap. Pet., I, p. 68), and William de Pylmer, another nephew, had the canonry and prebend of Moray (ibid.). William de Pilmur witnessed confirmation of Snawdoun to the Abbey of Dryburgh,c. 1350 (Dryburgh, p. 232), Adam de Pilmore was juror on assize regarding the mill-lands of Quarelwode, Moray, and Thomas de Pilmor or Pylmore served as juror in 1393 and 1398 (REM., p. 171,205, 212). William Pylmoere, merchant of Scotland, had a safe-conduct into England, 1464 (Bain, IV, 1347), and William Pilmur was tenant in Milhorn, 1462 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 134). George Pylmuir was witness at Coldingham, Berwickshire, 1557 (Home, 195), Thomas Pilmuir appears in Lauder, 1561 (Lauder), and William Pilmer in Haltoun of Rattray, 1690 (Dunkeld). The name appears to have disappeared from the Gerioch after the battle of Harlaw, 1411. Pilmore and Pylmore 1329, Pilmwr 1477, Pylmur 1552, Pylmure 1408, Pylmwre 1468.
