Le Pinder or le Bailli, probably descended from William, a Norman of distinction, Dapifer to Earl Warrenne t. William I., whose son Wymer Dapifer was living 1086 (Domesd.). From him descended the family of De Gressenhall, of whom William de G. t. Henry II. had several brothers, of whom John le Pinder (le Bailli) was father of Richard le P., living 1252 (Roberts, Excerpta, ii. 127), whose son, with Wymar his brother, gave lands to Castle-Acre (also benefited by Wymer Dapifer, and others of the family; Blomefield, ix. 168, vii. 519, vi. 35, &c.). In the next generation Thomas le P. was of Lincoln, where the family remained till recently, and from which sprang the Pinders, now Beauchamp, Earls Beauchamp.

Pindar or Pinder has been a characteristic name of Lincolnshire and Notts for at least six centuries, Le Pinder being the ancient form of the name in Notts and in Glentham, Lincolnshire, in the reign of Edward I. (H. R.). Pynder and Pindar were Leake and Benington names in the reign of Edward III. (T.). A family of gentry named Pindar resided at Owston in the 17th and 18th centuries (residing at Brumby Wood Hall last century), one of the ancestors being John Pindar, attorney, who lived in the time of Charles II. (Sto.).

At present they are mostly to be found around Newark, and are still represented at Misson.
