This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'at the pirie,' i.e. the pear orchard; v. Pury.

(1) Most probably from diminutive of Peter through the French form Pierre. (2) It might also be local, 'at the pear-tree,' ME. pirie, atte Pirye, but first most probable. A common surname in the shires of Aberdeen and Banff. Many generations of Piries have lived at Iriewells in the parish of Udny (AEI., p. 102), and there was an old family of Pyrrie in Paisley dating from the end of the fifteenth century. John Pirre was burgess of Glasgow in 1550 (Protocols, I), Adam Peine, tailzeour in Inverness, 1625 (Rec. Inv., II. p. 165), James Pirie appears in Bogmyln in 1633 (SCM., III, p. 100). William Pirrhie was retoured heir of David Pirrhie in Nuik, 1602 (Retours, Lanark, 29), Agnes Pirie was accused of charming in 1664 (Alford, p. 56-57), Robert Pirrie, bailie of Paisley, 1686 (RPC., 3. ser. XII, p. 383), and Janet Peirie was retoured heir in a tenement in Glasgow in 1695 (Retours, Lanark, 422). William Peirrie is in record in Tories of Luce in I729 (Wigtown), and another William Pirrie was member of the Huntly Volunteers in 1798 (Will, p. 7). Perie 1589, Pirrhy 1674, Pyerie 1601, Peirie, Peny, and Pirrhie 1686, and the spellings Pere, Peiries, Pire, Pirrie, and Pyrie are recorded in Records of the Sheriff Court of Aberdeenshire. compare Perrie.
