User-submitted Reference
Pither is thought to have originated from Peter (from the Greek for stone). It is sometimes aligned with Petherton in Somerset, but it is difficult to find a link.
The Pithers spontaneously emerge in Shinfield, Berkshire as butchers with Moyes Pither in c. 1610. They soon populate the country over several centuries. They mainly raised cattle bought from Drovers, were auctioneers and butchers. In those days, you inherited your trade and status from your forefathers.
The name Moyes (Moises) is either a misspelling or indicates a Spanish origin for the family. That may mean they were possibly at one time Sephardic Jews. It was not unusual for Jews at the time to migrate away from London at the time and take on new identities.
