(English) belonging to Pitney (Soms.) = Pit(t)a’s Waterside [prob. Anglo-Saxon Pit(t)aníg-Pit(t)an-, genit. of Pit(t)a + íg, island, waterside] We find the form Pittaníg in a charter A.D. 963 (‘Cart. Sax.,’ 1118); but here it is a variant of the forms Peattaníg and Peatanig which occur earlier in the same charter and seem to relate to Patney, Wilts.
(English) One who came from Pitney (Pytta’s island), in Somerset.
