Pizanias Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

The Pizanias surname comes from a typical Italian family name, known as Pisani. A family from Pisa, Italy whose members during the 1880s decided to move along Asia Minor, and more specifically Smyrna. A great grandfather was a military doctor for the Turkish army.

The family moved on to Greek isles, and especially Kalymnos and Kos later, to avoid the massacre in Smyrna. Ever since, the name is located in three basic isles - Kalymnos where many locals are named after Pizanias and there is also a Pizanias statue in the main city of the island, Kos and Rhodes. Some part of the family moved on to mainland Greece, and especially Piraeus. Most reside since the 70s at and around Athens, while the vast majority of the older families have claimed a great localised part in the aforementioned islands.
