A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

Said to be derived from Old Scots playfeire, a play fellow or companion, but this perhaps is mere popular etymology. The older coats of arms of Playfair are said to be similar to those of the Norfolk Playfords. The first of the name recorded was William Playfayre, the messenger from the earl of Orkney to Sir John Comyn in 1290 to inform him of the arrival in Orkney of the "Damsel of Scotland" (i.e. the Maid of Norway) (Bain, II, p. 107). A citizen of St. Andrews named Playfair was summoned to appear before the Privy Council for having taken part in a demonstration against Melville the Reformer David Playfair in Bendochy, 1745 (Dunkeld). Several persons of this name have been distinguished in the annals of Scotland: Prof. John Playfair, William H. Playfair the famous architect, Dr. James Playfair, and Lyon, first Lord Playfair. Playfeir 1584, Playfer 1555.
