A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

This surname is derived from a nickname. This surname is as old as the 13th century. Lower suggests that it and Pullrose arose out of feudal custom. He finds them in Sussex in 1296, and in the same county knows property close to Ashdown Forest held of the Duchy of Lancaster by one red rose. The reeve of the manor comes periodically and plucks a rose from the tree (v. Patr. Brit).

A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

(English), 13th cent. Pluckerose, is apparently a nickname for an official who, under an ancient tenurial condition, had periodically to pluck a rose [Old English pluccian, to pluck, gather + rose (Latin rosa), a rose]

Surnames of the United Kingdom (1912) by Henry Harrison

Both this surname and the analogous one, Pullrose, occur in a Sussex subsidy roll, 1296. Both names probably had their origin in a feudal custom. The holding of lands by the annual rent of a rose, was very common in the middle ages, and it even exists down to the present day. A friend of mine holds a landed property on the borders of Ashdown Forest, co. Sussex, part of the Duchy of Lancaster, by one red rose. On the front of a farmhouse belonging to him is a large rose tree, to which the reeve of the manor periodically comes, and either plucking or pulling a flower, sticks it into his button-hole, and walks off. To something of this kind the Pluckroses and the Pullroses doubtless owe their names. Pluckerose. H.R.
