From the occupation, an artisan who worked in lead, originally applied to a man who also dealt in lead, OF. Plummier, NF. plombier. Wilyam Plumer of Tweddale, burgess of Andirstoun (i.e. St. Andrews), was indentured to "theke the mekil quer with lede and guttir yt al about sulficiandly with lede" (RAA., II, 43). At the end of the indenture, which is dated 16th February 1394-5, he is again mentioned as "Wilyam of Tweddal plummer." in 1420 there is mention of the 'skalt hows" of Richard Johnson "in the quhilkis duellis Nichol Plumber" (ibid., 53). Alexander Plumbar was tenant of Kyncregh Grange in 1460 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 133), Pait Plumer and Dandie Plumer were tenants of the abbot of Kelso in 1567 (Kelso, p. 523,529), and in 1642 Andrew alias Dand Plumbar, son of John Plumbar in Kelso, was retoured heir in lands in the bailiary of Lauderdaill (Retours, Berwick, 243). Sir John Plumbar was vicar of Rendochty in 1472 (Bamff, p. 30), Alexander Plumber was factor to William, earl of Roxburgh, in 1661 (RRM., I, p. 337), and Margaret Plumber is recorded in Kelso in 1682 (Peebles CR.).
