'Hir belte was of plonkete, with birdis fulle baulde.'

Nevertheless, although some of our Plunketts may owe their name to (2), like Russell, Burnett, Blount, Sec, the general derivation is undoubtedly (1).

Or De Plugenet, from Plouquenat near Rennes, Bretagne. Alan de Plugenoi occurs in Oxford 1158 (Rot. Pip.). Hugh de Plugenet mar. Sibil, dau. of Joce de Dinant, and acquired Lamborne, Berks. His son Alan P. 1219 paid 100 marks for lively of Lamborne. Alan P. 1267 was Lord of Kilpeck, Hereford, and was a baron by writ 1295. John Plunket (probably his nephew) settled in Ireland, and was ancestor of the Earls of Fingall, Lords Louth and Dunsany, and the eminent Lord Plunket, Chancellor. The family bears the bend of the Lords Plugenet of England.
