William Pollard witnessed a charter by Adam de Lamberton of the third part of Lamberton, c. 1190-1200 (BNCH., XVI, p. 332; Home, 224). James Pollart was infeft in the lands of Costoun in the barony of Torphichen, 1549 (Laing, 554).
This name, which occurs in the H.R. as Polard, as well as in its present orthography, is probably local. Tonkin says, that the barton of Trelleigh in Redruth, co. Cornwall, was "the seat of that most ancient family of Pollard, from whence all the others of that name were descended." D. Gilbert's Cornwall, iii. 383. Whether this broad assertion would bear the test of genealogical investigation, I know not; certain it is, that the name is very widely spread, not alone in the West, but also in the East and North of England. In the county of Durham the owners of it acquired the family characteristic of the POLITIC POLLARDS.
in H. R. POLARD. From pol-ard, the high top or head.
A tree having its fop cut off; a fish; Poularde, French, a fat chicken; Pol, Dutch, a loose or lewd man, and ard, disposition. Poule—ard, chicken—hearted.
Pollard is a name established in different parts of England. It has been in Cambridgeshire for several centuries, and was numerous in the county in the reign of Edward I., when there were also a few of the name in Lincolnshire, Kent, and Essex (H. R.).
