From the lands of Polwarth in the parish of the same name, Berwickshire. Adam de Paulwrth witnessed a quitclaim of Suineswde by Patrick, first earl of Dunber (Raine, 118). Adam de Pauliswithe (error for -wrthe) witnessed another charter by the same earl (ibid., 122), and also one by Patrick the second earl in lifetime of his father (ibid., 125). Ada de Polwrth witnessed a charter by Walter Olifard, c. 1210 (SHR., II, p. 175).

Adam de Paulewurth witnessed a charter by Patrick, earl of Dunbar concerning a grant to Abbey of Melrose, c. 1230-31 (Wemyss, II, p. xlviii). Robert de Paulworth and Beatrix his wife made an excambion of lands in 1258 (Kelso, 302). Gilbert de Paulwrt, a witness c. 1270 (May, 23). Patrick de Poulworth, miles, witnessed donation by Henry de Aynestrother to Dryburgh Abbey, c. 1330 (Dryburgh, 253), and as Patrick de Polworche (t misread c) was a charter witness in Edinburgh, 1364 (RMS., I, 187). William of Polword, a Scot, had letters of protection on going abroad, 1371 (Bain, IV, 195). The last of the lairds of Polworth of that name was Sir Patrick Polworth of that Ilk who resigned his lands into the hands of his feudal superior, George, earl of March, who in 1377 bestowed them upon John Sinclair of Herdmanstown (HMC., 14. Rep., App., pt. 3, p. 60). Hennes (Hames or Hauves) Polvoir or Poulvoir, a Scot, at Tours, tainted the standard of Joan of Arc. The name is considered by authorities (Francisque Michel, Les Ecoss. en France, I, p. 175; John Hill Burton, and Andrew Lang) to be a French attempt at Polworth. George Pollwart witnessed an instrument of sasine, 1495 (Home, 26). Grissillda Polwart was heir of Alexander Polwart in Roigcoat, 1668 (Retours, Linlithgow, 222).
