Roger le Porcher.—Cal. Inq. P.M.
The family of Porcher left France at the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes, and settled in South Carolina; and a descendant established himself in England about the year 1768. Their ancestors, who were long seated at Richebourg, on the banks of the Loire, were ennobled as Counts Porcher. "They are traced," according to B.L.G., "to a very ancient date, the originator of the family being Simon le Porcher, hereditary grand huntsman to Hugh Capet, the founder of the French monarchy, from whose official duty of slaying the wounded boar the name is derived." Le Porcher signifies in Old French "the swine-herd," and is a more probable origin of the name.
This name originated with Simon Le Porcher, hereditary grand huntsman to Louis Capel, King of France, from whose official duty of slaying the boar, the name is derived.
