(English) Dweller near the entrance or gate; one who acted as a gatekeeper.
Hugo de Port came into England at the Norman Conquest, and held fifty-five lordships in the counties of Hants and Dorset, as tenant in capite. One of his descendants assumed the surname of Saint-John. A Hubert de Port was also a tenant in capite in Hampshire, at the making of Domesday Book. Kelham's Domesday.
From port, a gate, as of a fortified place; a prefix of numerous local names. Lower says Hugo de Port came into England at the Norman Conquest; but that this name may be the same as the Ad Portam, or Atte-Gate of mediæval records. It may also sometimes be corrupted from the name Porret; from Porret, dep. La Manche, in Normandy.
1. A baronial family. Adam, Robert, Henry, Ralph, Engelram de Portu, Normandy 1180-95 (Magni Rotuli Scaccarii Normanniae). See Dugdale, Banks. The main line took the name of St. John.
