A south country surname. The family of Porteous of Hawkshaw, an old family in Peeblesshire. John Pertus of Glenkirk in record 1443, also owned lands in Fife. George Portwis held the lands of Glenkirk in 1478-84 (ALA., p. 81,140). John Portewis had charter in 1513 of the lands of Glenkirk and Quhitslaid, and Sir William Portus was chaplain in the parish church of S. Rega of Kilbucho, 1550. James Pourtes, glover, in Edinburgh, 1670 (Edinb. App.). Perhaps of local origin from some place like 'Porthouse.' The derivation from Scots porteous, a catalogue or list of persons indicted to appear before the Justice-Ayre, is untenable. Pertuuss 1549, Porteouse 1701, Portews 1479, Portowis 1454, Portows 1561, Portuis 1478, Portuiss 1563, Portuus 1527, Portuuss 1549.
