User-submitted Reference

The Portugalete surname comes from the name of a town in the Basque Country, Spain. It has a very rich history of trade in the bay of Biscay and good diplomatic relations with Castile, and later Spain. Many sailors that embarked in expeditions to the Philippines come from there, and therefore, spreading the name of their hometown to the natives of the new continent. That explains it's popularity as a last name in the Philippines and Spain. Whereas in Canada and Finland, it is probably due to Basque whale-hunters settling in the arctic during winter times for their hunting of the massive sea mammals, that fed asque communities for whole years.
