User-submitted Reference

The Postill surname comes from Latin post ille, which means 'that which comes after'. As postill is a word in its own right - postills were notes in the margins of bibles (perhaps the scribes who wrote them got called postill; postillions were those who rode at the back (of something) and in German it was the name given to the person who read a short homily after the main sermon in church. In the UK before 1881, the Postles were mainly in the west of Yorkshire and the Postills were all in the east of Yorkshire, west of York; and a few in London. There is a good chance that they came over from Flanders with William the conqueror.
