A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

Of local origin from the lands of Primrose in the parish of Dunfermline. The first appearance of the place name is c. 1150, when it occurs in a charter of the Abbey of Dunfermline under the form Primros (RD., p. 5). The exact meaning of the name, which also occurs in Berwickshire, may be "tree of the moor," from Old Welsh or Rritish prenn, "tree," and rhos, "moor." As a surname Primrose is not common. The first of the name in record appears to have been Jonne Prymros or Primros, mason in Edinburgh, one of the parties who contracted in 1387 for the building of five chapels on the south side of St. Giles s parish church, Edinburgh (CDE., p. 14; Egidii p. 24). Archibald Prymrose was a friar in the monastery of Culross in 15G9 (Laing, 844), and in 1608 payment was .nde to a James Prymroiss in Aberdeen (SCM., V, p. 82). Gilbert Prymeose, "clerk of His Maiesties secreit counsaill" in 1631 (ibid., II, p. 228) was ancestor of Archibald Primrose of Carrington who was created Viscount Primrose in 1700 and earl of Rosebery in 1703. The Primroses first appear on record as owners of lands in and about the middle of the sixteenth century (Nisbet, Plates, p. 10). Many Scots emigrated to Sweden in the seventeenth century, and among them was a John Primeroose, afterwards merchant in Stockholm, whose son Henry was ennobled in 1653 and died governor of Johannsborg in 1668. Rev. James Primrose published a history of Mediaeval Glasgow in 1913. Prymrois 1587, Prymross 1687.
