It was likely given to a gaoler (jailer,) and was less likely to be held by a prisoner due to the tendency for unflattering surnames to be changed. It could also be a contraction of 'priest son' - the son of the priest. Prison is also found in Beverley, Massachusetts as a corruption of Preston.
