User-submitted Reference
This surname comes from the city of Catania, Sicily and it means 'wife of the priest', from the Latin to Italian-Volgare , privite/prete. Indeed in Catania one of the largest monasteries in Europe. It was founded in 1558 and called The Benedictine Monastery of San Nicolò l'Arena; and today it hosts the Department of Humanities of the University of Catania. In times past, noble and rich families of Sicily gave everything to the first male child and the others only had to marry a rich girl or become a priest. This was to avoid splitting inheritance. So many woman and men were forced to become priests or nuns at the behest of the family. And many of those monks, in spite of being formally monks, they led a married life with women (privitera, wife of a priest) who lived in the houses built around the monastery where their children also grew up. This is why Catania is the city of Privitera surname.
