Prowse was a name well established in Tiverton in the 16th and 17th centuries: in 1598, Edward Prowse, of Pilywell, in the parish of Tiverton, gave £20 to the poor (H.). Prowse is a frequent name in the list of burgesses and churchwardens of Tiverton during the 17th century (D. and H.). During the 17th and 18th centuries a distinguished family of Prowse resided at Axbridge, Somerset; one of the family last century was five times elected knight of the shire for the county of Somerset (Collinson's "Somerset"). Prowse is also a name established in Cornwall, in the Penzance district.
