Pullin Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from a nickname. Me Pullen.' If pullen was used in the singular as well as plural sense, the origin of this not uncommon surname is very obvious, and is synonymous with 'chicken,' and takes its place in the class of poultry and bird nicknames; compare Duck, Drake, Jay, Nightingale, &c. In a note to pullayly (Promptorium Parvulorum.) Mr. Way quotes the use of pullen for poultry by Tusser; also pullayne by Palsgrave. He adds, 'Gerarde observes that in Cheshire they sow buck-wheat for "their cattell, pullen, and such like."'
Nicholas le Pullen, Salop, 1273. Hundred Rolls.
John Puleyn, Wiltshire, ibid.
Thomas Pulein, Yorkshire, ibid.
Richard Puleyn, Dorset, ibid.
John Polayn, Somerset, 1 Edward III: Kirby's Quest.
Nicholas Polayn, Somerset, 1 Edward III: ibid.
The 'g' in Pulleng and Pulling is, of course, excrescent, as in Jennings and a hundred other names. The forms Pullan (8), Pullein (1), Pullen (a), Pullin (1), Pullon (3), and Pullyen (1) occur in the West Riding of Court Directory. As Paulin (or Powlin) was so common a fontname in Yorkshire and elsewhere, it is probable that many of the above are of baptismal origin. If so, v. Paulin.
1 metonymic for a Poulterer [Middle English pullen (pullain(e), poultry; a pl. form of French poule, a hen, fowl, Low Latin pulla, fem. of Latin pullus, a chicken] ‘Poullailler, a poulter or keeper of pullaine.'—Cotgrave, French Dict., ed. 1650.
She . . . knows how pullen should be cramm’d.—Beaumont & Fl., Scornful Lady, V. ii.
2 the French Poulain = (a) a nickname from the Colt [M.French poulin, Old French polin, Latin pullin-us] (b) a name applied to the children of unions between French and Syrians at the time of the Crusades [prob. from Latin pull-us, dark-coloured] 3 the French Poulaine, an old form of Pologne, Poland: v. Poland.
4 the French Poulin, a form of Paulin (as well as of Poulain): v. Paulin.
Nicholas le Pullen.—Hundred Rolls John Puleyn.—do.
Nicholas Polayn.— Soms. Subsidy-Roll (a.d. 1327).
I can find no better origin for this rather common surname, than the A. Norm, pulleyn, and French poulain, a colt or foal; or more generally, like the Latin pullus, the young of everything. See Pulley.
