PUNCHARDON: This name is found in Holinshed's list, called the Roll of Battel Abbey, and there is no doubt that the introduction of the family into England took place at the Conquest, since Ponte-Cardon occurs in Domesday. They gave the suffix to Heanton-Punchardon, co. Devon. The name was probably derived from the place now called Pont-Chardon, in the arrondisement of Argentan, in Normandy.
Punchardon: from Pontcardon in Normandy. Robert de Pontcardon held lands in Devon in 1080. William de Pontcardon held six fees in Somerset and Devon in 1165. Now Punchard, Pinchard.
