From French Prudhomme, by metathesis of r. Willelmus Prodomme of Scotia, mercator had a safe-conduct into England, 1373 (Rof. Scot., I, p. 960). John de Purdome held a land in Glasgow, 1454 (LCD., p. 175). As Proudham, Prodham, and Prudom the name is found in the North and East Ridings of Yorkshire, and on the Rorder it was early found as Prudholm, Purdholm, Purdom, and Purdon. David Purdom was deprived of his lands in Liddesdale by the earl of Angus in 1476. James Purdone was sued for wrongfully occupying certain lands in Middlebie in 1478. In 1487 the tenement of John Purdome in Glasgow is mentioned (REG., p. 454), and in 1494 the lands of David Purdoun in Glasgow are mentioned (ibid., p. 468). William Perdhome was fourd nearest heir of John Purdhome, his grandfather, in 1509 (Renwick, Glasgow). Andrew Purdon was burgess freeman of Glasgow, 1609 (Burgesses), Robert Purdon is recorded in Carterburnfoot, 1686 (Peebles CR.), and James Purdon in Newtoun of Partick, 1709 (Minutes, p. 58). One of this name gave origin to Purdomston in the parish of Middlebie, Dumfriesshire.
