Purtill Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Woulfe states that Purtill is derived from a place called Porthill, forming the surname de Porthill.

I have met no instance of this in any mediaeval or modern record; nor is Porthill or Purtill to be found in the standard works on British surnames such as Reaney, Bardsley and Weekley. In Ireland, at any rate Purtill and Purtell are forms of Purcell. Its variants Purshell and Purscell, found in some seventeenth century documents, could have become Purtell in speech and subsequently been so written. This is corroborated by a Fiant of 1601 in which we find Robert Reogh Purtell, Garret Purcell and William FitzJohn Purcell all resident in the same part of Co. Limerick; and coming to modern times the return of Clare freeholders for 1821has thirteen Purtills in the barony of Moyarta and only one Purcell. Official records of the Registrar-General show that some families in Co. Clare have used Purcell and Purtill synonymously. I can also add from local knowledge that Purtill is currently pronounced Purcill in Co.

Clare. As Purtill the name was formerly numerous in Co. Tipperary: there were seventeen householders so called in South Tipperary at the time Griffith's Valuation was carried out in 1850 and Edmund Purtil of Cahir, Co. Tipperary, is mentioned in the British Museum catalogue of Gaelic manuscripts (1865).

Purcell, which is numerous in Clare as well as in most counties of Munster and Co. Kilkenny, is dealt with in Irish Families (pp 248-249), where many famous men of the name are mentioned: as Purtill it has not been prominent.

In Ireland Purtill is not, as has been stated, a form of the English Porthill: it is a variant of Purcell found in Cos. Clare and Tipperary. SIF 126
