Pyne Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Woulfe equates Pyne and also Fyan with Payne deriving them from the Latin paganus; but Reaney, the best authority on English names, distinguishes between Pyne and Payne. The latter, he states, is from paganus, the former having several different origins viz (1) Old French pin, nickname for a tall, upright man, (2) atte pyne, i.e. dweller by the pine or at the place called Pyne or (3) from the French place Le Pin. In Ireland families of the name have been located mainly in Co. Cork with a few in Co. Clare and some other Munster counties. I have not met any early mediaeval instance of it, but it has been in this country continuously for some four centuries, at least since Robert Pyne was the Earl of Ormond's attorney in 1599. In modern times we find some of them among the Catholic farming and trading community, but for the most part they have been of the Protestant gentry class, often holding official positions: thus Henry Pyne was one of the commissioners appointed to survey the property in Co. Tipperary to be allotted to Royalist officers after the Restoration; Henry Pyne was a Poll-Money Commissioner for Co. Cork in 1660 and 1661 and in the next generation Chief Justice Sir Richard Pyne was a prominent figure in the administration. Many also appear in the army lists, though not in that of James 11. Some 20 Pyne wills, nearly all in Cos. Cork and Clare, are recorded, but the originals of these were for the most part lost in the destruction of the Public Record Office in 1922.
The name Fyan, with its variants Fynes and Foynes, is dealt with earlier in this volume.
= Pine, q.v.
With many high lorer [laurel] and pyn. —Chaucer, Rom. of the Rose, 1379.
This name should not be confused with Payne (which is paganus): Pyne is analogous with pine-tree.
It has been located mainly in Co. Cork and is on record since 1599, mainly, but not entirely, as Protestant gentry. SIF 126
(English) Dweller at, or near, the pine tree; dweller at the sign of the pine tree.
See Pine. Robt. and Jno. Pyne, Protestant refugees from Dieppe, landed at Rye, 1572. Harl. MS. 15. 70.
