(1) may be a nickname from the diminutive of pie or pye, a magpie. compare Pye.

(2) from an inn-sign. J. atte Pye. London, is recorded in 1339 (Ewen, p. 230). Brisius Pyot was custumar and burgess of Inverness in 1361 (Invernssiana, p. 65). Laurence Pyot or Piote was presbyter and notary public in St. Andrews diocese in 1434, pensioner of Brechin in 1448 (REB., I, 61; II, 72), and in 1441 and 1450 appears as archdeacon of Aberdeen (Bain, IV. 1151; Panmure, II, 225). Patrick Piot was 'seriandus' in Aberdeen in 1445 (CRA., p. 15), and a sum of money was uplifted for Sir Patrick Pyot in 1475 (SCM., IV, p. 10). John Pyot was a witness in 1455 (Cambus., 97), part of the mill of Craquhy was leased to Thomas Pyot and Patrick Pyot, his son, in 1483 (RAA., II. 217), Thomas Piat was burgess of Aberdeen in 1496 (SCM., V, p. 32), and Malcolm Pyot was admitted burgess there in 1462, and Gilbert Pyot in 1534 (NSCM., I, p. 17, 53). Alexander Piot was feuar of Foferdie in 1564 (Rent. Dunk., p. 346), John Pyet was stabler in Aberdeen in 1596 (SCM., I, p. 88), John Pyett was heir of James Pyet of Overbalmyle, his father, in 1611 (Inquis., 528), and Peter Pyot is recorded in Snaigoe in 1719 (Dunkeld). Some individuals named Pyet petitioned the Estates of Parliament in 1707 for permission to change their name to Graham. "Act in favoers of William Pyet his Kinsmen and Relations.
