Chien is also the same surname. However, Chien was first adopted by Wades-Giles System around 1880 in Beijing. Now mostly used in Taiwan.

Qian is also the same surname. It is the latest Phonetic system called Pinyin used by people in most countries to learn Chinese. This phonetic system was developed in 1950s.

The surname of Qian/Tsien/Chien can be traced back to ancestor of King Qian of Wuyue, of which the then capital was Hangzhou in 907 AD. The Qian family is highly academic. In USA, Roger Tsien was Nobel price winner. His uncle, Hsue-shen Tsien, founder of Guggenhelm Aeronautical Lab, predecessor of JPL. He went back to China and became the father of Chinese rockets. His name in Pinyin was Xueshen Qian.
