Quadling Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from a nickname. 'Coeur-de-lion,' lionhearted.

Robert Querdelioun, Close Rolls, 2 Edward III.

Ralph Querdelyun. Excerpta e Rotulis Finium in Turri Londinensi.

William Querdelion, London. Riley's Memorials of London.

By the middle of the 15th century the form assumed was Querdling. In 1433 John Querdling occupied a magisterial position in Norwich. Of him or an immediate descendant a rhyme is quoted: 'Whoso hath any quarrel or pie, If he but withstand John Hankey, John Qwerdlyng, Nic. Waleys, John Belagh, John Meg, Sore shall him rewe, For they rule all the Court with their lawes newe.' - FF. iii. 145. Later on it became Codling or Codlin (which see), but even to this day in Norfolk and Suffolk Quodling or Quadling exists as a surname. No doubt Richard I made the sobriquet popular. I had the pleasure of pointing out in Notes and Queries (1888) that codling, an apple, is the same word as corurde-lion (sound to the core), the same intermediate stages having been gone through. 'Querdlynge, appulle, duricenum': Promptorium Parvulorum.

'In July come ... plummes in fruit, ginnitings, quadlins': Bacon, Essay 46.

1436. Simon Codlyng, rector of Bittering, Norfolk: History of Norfolk.
