Famous men who have borne this type of name include Sextillius and Quintillian, Roman consuls. Between the first and fifth centuries ordinal number names of saints from Primus (first) to Octavius (eighth) make their appearance, indicating a fairly widespread vogue in the early Christian period. In the case of the surname Quaranta, this name comes from the word "quaranta" which means "forty." The word "quaranta" is itself derived from the Latin "quadraginta" which became "quaraginta" in late Latin.

References to this surname are ancient and noble. The most notable families of the name were the Quaranta family of Mantova, the Quaranta family of Sicily and the Quaranta family of Naples. It is said that the latter are of Norman origin, having settled in Naples during the reign of Guiamaro IV. It is also said that they received their name (Quaranta meaning "forty") because one of this family led forty pilgrims from the Holy Land and routed the Saracens from Salerno. They possessed the fifedom of Quaranta which included the Castle of Quaranta. They held the title of Duke and Count of Quaranta. One Oranio Quaranta was a member of the government of Naples in 1309. Domenico Quaranta was ennobled by King Filipe IV of Spain in 1663. Both King Victor Emmanuele II of Italy and King Carl-Alberto of Sardinia ennobled Filippo Quaranta.
