(Anglo-French-Latin) Four-Handed, i.e. Mail - Fisted [Anglo-French quatremayn(s, quatremantes, quatermain(s, Old French quatre-main, four-handed; Latin quatuor, four, and man-us, hand] Clare Quatremayns.—Hundred Rolls
The same as Quartermaine and Quatremaine, and the H.R. Quatremayns and Qoatremeyns. The origin of this name is doubtful. Four hands form the charge of the shield of the French family of Quatremaine, and there are the French surnames Quatrebarbes, Quatremaire, and Quatremere. The original bearer of the name may have dwelt near a sign-post pointing in four different directions (four hands).
For Quatremaines, appears to have been the same as Quatremass. Hubert de Quatremaines of Lincoln 1165. Hubert Q. paid 1203 a fine in Oxford for one fee (Rotulus Cancellarii). William Q. was summoned from Oxford 1263 to attend with horses and arms. Thomas Q. summoned from Oxford to a council at Westminster, 1324 (Parliamentary Writs).
From the French, Quatremains; a personal name In Oxon, temp. King John.
