This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Quenilda' or 'Quenild,' the Norman form of Gunnilda, already resident in England before the Conquest Miss Yonge has an interesting account of Gunhild or Gunnilda (ii. 316), but she is mistaken in saying, 'After the Conquest Gunhild died away in England.' It was fairly popular for three centuries in both the Danish as well as the Norman dress; v. Gunnell.

There are eight Gonnilds to one Quenild in one single township in 1273; v. Hundred Rolls, vol. ii. pp. 354-5. It is needless to say that Quenild would be sure to become Quennell.

(2) Local. Mr. Lower suggests that Quennell is the French Quesnel, equivalent to our English Oak or Oakes. In some instances this may be quite possible. Nevertheless (1) must be considered the general parent.
