The name is territorial from Quinci (now Quinçay) in Maine, France. Robert attested King William's grant of burgh and market to the church of Glasgow, c. 1175 (REG., p. 37), and also the same king's gift of the serf Gillemachoi de Conglud with his children and all his descendants to the bishop of Glasgow, c. 1180 (ibid., p. 33). He also witnessed the gift of carucate of Edenham to the Abbey of Kelso (Kelso, 383), the royal donation of the church of Gutherin (Guthrie) to the Abbey of Arnbroath (RAA., I, 96), the king's gift of Aulon Macbele, a nativus or serf, to the bishop of Moray (REM., 4), and a confirmation of the church of Langtune to Kelso (Kelso, 144). He was succeeded by his son, Saher de Quinci, created earl of Winchester in 1207 (Inchaffray, p. 270). As Seiher or Seyr de Quenci we find him witnessing charters to the Abbeys of Kelso (Kelso, 409) and Arbroath (RAA., I, 93bis). Mr. Joseph Rain, the record scholar, in his introduction to the first volume of the Calendar of documents relating to Scotland states that the connection of the De Quinceys with Scotland requires illustration.
