James Cuthquen, Edinburgh merchant, who petitioned for the return of his goods captured by the English in the high seas in 1438, is doubtless the James Cuthquen, Scottish merchant, who had a safe conduct to travel in England in 1450 (Bain IV, 1115, 1227).

QUOTHQUAN: From Quothquan or Quothquhan near Biggar, Lanarkshire. Magister Hund de Cuthquen witnessed a charter by Malcolm Loccard, c. 1210 (RMP., p. 71). James Cuthquen, Edinburgh merchant, who petitioned for the return of his goods captured by the English in the high seas in 1438, is doubtless the James Cuthquen, Scottish merchant, who had a safe conduct to travel in England in 1450 (Bain IV, 1115, 1227). Thomas Quodquen, notary public, 1477, and John Cuthquen, witness in West Lothian, 1487 (Binns, 15, 21). Patrick Cuthquhon had a letter of gift in 1500 (RSS., I, 488), and Elizabeth Quytquhen is in record in Linlithgow in 1531 (Johnsoun, 5).
