It is curious to note that the only modern instances of the surname I have seen are in Somerset and Gloucestershire, in which latter county we find Raban a personal name as long as eight centuries ago. This must be ranked amongst the curiosities of nomenclature.

RABAN: Edward Raban, said to have been an Englishman, introduced printing into Aberdeen before 1622 (Watt, Aberdeen and Banff, p. 226). But the surname was known in the north at a much earlier date. John Rebayn was burgess of Cromarty in 1449, Thomas Ruban was charter witness there, 1467, and Mergaret Ribbone had sasine of some land there in 1536 (TGSI., XXXI, p. 299,322). Rybben 1547.
