Raedman Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

A name initially having it's roots derive from Celtic dialects, Raedman was a name to signify a clan much like the many surnames found in Celtic culture. It's unknown which country had Raedman as it's own founding name due to this name being so rare, which is fitting to the context the name beholds. Raed in Arabic cultures mean leader or pioneer, however in 800 AD when the Vikings settled in Ireland and Northern Scotland the translation of 'Red Raiders' or dialect for 'Red haired raiders' had a derivative translation known as Raedman. This name continued as a clan name for raiders in the Viking era within Ireland and Northen Scotland however it's speculated the rarity of this name in modern day Ireland or Scandinavia is because the Raedman clan didn't expand outside the British isles or Ireland, leaving them to be an outcast clan by the leading Viking parties. Traces of their history are in Wexford Ireland where the name Raedman is found along knight scriptures. The historical context of Raedman related to it's history within Ireland is as the Viking description suggests, however it carries historical relations to knights like Gaurnerus and Ralph de Southwark (1234 A.D). The Vikings leaving Ireland and Northern Scotland that resulted the decline in the name's relevance, the history of the name was salvaged by the separate chapter of Templars from England once they made it to Ireland by observing remaining runes and tabards left by the previous occupying Vikings. Gaunrnerus for example had new founded squires and dissidents that proved worthy to join the ranks of his chapter adopt the name of Raedman to establish their identity, while experienced members under Gaurnerus after his death would find themselves in service to Ralph de Southwark. The popularity of Raedman only remained with the prevalence of Knights that had no other surname suitable for service under Gaurnerus or Southwark, leaving the name to be severely unrecognized and only mentioned in records. Eventually when the Irish chapter of Knights distanced themselves from the General Chapter in England the repercussions by the church of England, Edward II, and Philip the fair in 1307 had the Master Templars and their men arrested and put under trial. The Knights of Ireland who desired to accumulate revenue and maintain vast resources and land independent of England resulted in their possessions and men being redistributed, and their chapter disbanded and outlawed. Raedmen Knights who were arrested had to disavow their actions and names in repentance in England, and those who weren't captured changed their names to avoid charges. As the name died when the Vikings left, it suffered again when the knights were disbanded, given Raedman was a name associated with outlaws for both periods. Despite the stigma directed at the name Raedman it was a name related to people who wanted independence from their related parties and wanted the freedom to exist for their own benefits, even if it meant they will be outcasts from everyone else, for no price was too high in having the ownership of their own name.
