Wragg is the favourite modern Yorkshire form; compare Wray and Ray (2).

Sir James Rak was chaplain in Edinburgh, 1515 (Laing, 311), and Sir Thomas Rag, a cleric, was presented to the chaplainry of the Mount of Ormond, 1546 (RSS). David Rag was appointed minister in Inverness, 1561 (Rec. Inc., I, p. 71), Andrew Rag was reader at Cannisbie, Caithness, 1567 (OPS., II, p. 792), John Rage appears in Stirling, 1682 (Edin. App.), Alexander Ragg was bailie of Aberdeen, 1697 (SCM., V, p. 362), and Janet Ragg resident there, 1750 (Aberdeen CR.). Ragg and Wragg are typical Yorkshire surnames, probably from ODan. pers. name Wraghi, whence the placename Wragbi in the West Riding. Not likely to be a variant of Reoch or Riach as has been suggested.
