All double diminutives or pet forms of Reynold, a vocalized form of Reginald (see Reginaldus ). The Ranys or Rennys were extensive owners of land in the district of Craig in Angus from the middle of the fifteenth century, and the Rennies of Usan were recognised as an old family. Symon Renny was bailie of Inverkeithing in 1362 (Stodart, II, p. 366). John Rayny, pelliparius, was burgess of Stirlinig, 1436 (Cambus., 209). Andro Renny, a follower of the earl of Cassilis, was respited for murder, 1526 (RSS., I, 3386). Herbert Rainie or Rayning sat in Parliament for Dumfries, 1572, and was provost of the burgh at that time and several times afterwards till 1592 (Stodart, II, p. 365). Joseph Rainey was a member of Gartly Company of Volunteers, 1798 (Will, p. 23), and John Rennie (1761-1821), the famous engineer, was born in East Lothian.
