Story of the Surname 'Rakhpasare'

Our family surname is Rakhpasare (sometimes written as Rakhpasre or Rakhpasare).

This surname belongs to the Mang / Garodi Samaj in Maharashtra. Our community is also called Bhataki Samaj, because long ago people did not have permanent houses. They used to travel from one place to another. Most people worked as farm helpers. They did not have land or big businesses. Life was simple and poor.

How the surname started (as told by elders)

Long ago, men in the family had a habit.

• Before going to work, they spread ash on the floor of the house.

• In Marathi, ash is called 'Rakh.'

• They did this because they thought: if their wife went outside while they were away, her footprints would be seen on the ash.

• Since they spread ash daily, people started calling them 'Rakh-pasare.'

  • Rakh = ash

  • Pasare = spread

So the name Rakhpasare means 'the people who spread ash.'
