RAMORNIE: From the old barony of Ramornie near Cupar, Fifeshire. John of Remorgun is mentioned in 1381 (Cambus., 181), and again in 1390 when he witnessed a charter by Hugh Fraser of land in the barony of Kinneil (Southesk, p. 718). As Sir John Remorgny, knight of Scotland, he had a safe conduct in England in 1395 (Bain, IV, 472), and as Johannes de Ramorgny, miles, he appears as a charter witness in Edinburgh in 1397 (RMS., I, App. I, 157). Alexander de Ramorgny and Margareta, his wife, had a charter of the lands of Petglassy in 1406 (RMS., I, 887). The family was known as Ramorgney of that Ilk before 1439. Sir John of Ramornie was one of those who arrested the duke of Rothesay, eldest son of Robert III in 1402 and confined him in Falkland Tower.
