Lancashire or the Cheshire border; v. Higginbotham, Shufflebotham, Sidebotham, &c.

I am assured that this local surname is traceable to the eleventh century. The locus in quo appears to be in the parish of Bury, co. Lancaster, usually called Romsbottom. Bottom, I have already explained as a valley, or low ground, and the qualifying syllable is borrowed from the rhoms, rambs, or ramps, wild onions, whose botanical habitat is said to be localized to the place referred to, and to Ramsden in the same vicinity.
