An old gentle family of Ramsden resided at Crawstone, Halifax, in the 16th century; and the vicar of Halifax, early in the 17th century, bore this name (W.), Ramsden was the name of two mayors of Pontefract in the middle of the 17th century (M.). John Ramsden was high sheriff of the county of York in 1636 and 1672. William Ramsden, merchant, was lord mayor of York in 1675, and the sheriff of that city in 1637 bore the same name (D.). Ramsden was the name of three mayors of Hull in the reigns of James I. and Charles I. (Tickell's "Hull"). The name is still in Pontefract, Halifax, York, and Hull. Ramsden is a place in Lancashire.
