An apocopated form of Old English Randwulf or Randulf From Röndúlfr, 'shield wolf,' a common ON. personal name. The name "occurs frequently in the Register of Cupar Abbey. Amongst the tenants in Carse Grange are Ranalds, Ranaldsons, Randalsons and Randalls, or as it is sometimes given, Randal, Randale, Randell, Rendall. There were others about Perth in the days of the Reformation" ("Ancestry of Randall Thomas Davidson, archbishop of Canterbury, 1903," quoted in SHR., I, p. 327). Harry Randell, an Orkneyman, wrote the first communication in the Scots tongue known in Orkney, c. 1436 (Diplomatarium Norvegicum, XX, 815). Donald Randale was tenant of Calady, 1464, and Nichol Randale, tenant of Kerse-grange, 1478 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 138,212).
