The surname Rantall or Randall originates from the Anglo-Saxon tribes of ancient Britain. It derives from the baptismal name Randel or Rantall, a diminutive form of the personal name Rand. It comes from the word rand, which means 'shield' or 'wolf'. Alternatively, the name may have originated from the ancestral connection, meaning 'son of Randolph', as exemplified by the nickname Randle. Historical records indicate early instances of the surname used as a forename, such as Randle de Arclet in Cheshire around 1290.
